Wheway wait for Morley, but no worries for Saints
Saturday 5th April 2008, 12:00AM BST.
TRINITY football manager Joe Morley is waiting on the fitness on several key players ahead of this afternoon’s Wheway Cup final against St Paul’s at Springfield.
However it’s a different story in the Saints’ camp as they have a full squad to select from with the exception of midfielder Liam Walshe who is cup-tied.
The fourth meeting of the season between the Coca-Cola Combination’s top two clubs position-wise should provide fans with an interesting game of football as both like to get the ball down and play.
Matches between the two have been very close this season with one league match finishing even while the Saints won the other two meetings by a single goal.
Trinity manager Joe Morley said: ‘We are struggling. We had a very light training session on Thursday night and I won’t know until we arrive at Springfield who will be fit enough to play.
‘Ashley Dodd, Darren Swanson, Stephen McCarter, John Beatson and Gerard Meadows are all struggling and if you said who is more likely to play or miss out I’d say take your pick either way because I really don’t know.
‘What I do know though is that it will be a tough game and we will give it our best shot no matter who is playing.
‘We’ve lost just two games this season, one in the league and one in a cup so overall we’ve had a very good season.’
St Paul’s will be hoping it will be third time lucky in cup finals having been beaten in both the Charity and Le Riche finals this season by St Peter and Jersey Scottish respectively.
Saints manager Craig Culkin said: ‘We’ve had three great battles with Trinity already this season and I’m sure there will be another one today.
‘My boys were disappointed to lose in their last cup final and they have an early chance to put that result out of their system with the right result today.
‘We have scored a lot of goals of late and people look at Craig Leitch because he has got a lot of them.’
‘Yes Craig is a good creator and goal scorer but we have others who are doing well too. Mark Lucas has notched ten or eleven from midfield while Nathan Taylor’s contribution to the team is enormous and to me his is an unsung hero.
‘The way Nathan plays enables us to play the way we do and that is a big factor why we score so many goals. However, it will be tough against Trinity and I don’t expect many goals to be scored today.’
Kick-off is at 2.30 pm.
