Canavan and Kilmartin in bid to be top of table

Monday 7th April 2008, 12:00AM BST.

JERSEY will have a new Island snooker champion this year after Aaron Canavan and Ray Kilmartin won their respectively semi-finals on Friday.

At the Jersey Mechanics’ Institute Canavan beat former Channel Islands champion Gary Britton 3-0 while Kilmartin beat Guy Heys by the same score.

Britton left Canavan an easy red in the first frame and he was punished as Canavan – his 147 CVS team mate – scored a 51 break to win the opening frame 78-44. Canavan did not let Britton settle in frame two and a break of 47 and two in the 20s helped him home 103-0.

Britton went 30 points up in the third but then suffered a bad run of the balls and Canavan stepped in with a clearance of 48 to win the frame 59-48 and the match 3-0.

Kilmartin, who represented Jersey in the recent World Championships in Thailand, potted some excellent long shots to win 63-17, 97-5, 64-37 against Heys.

There will be a repeat of last year’s junior final between Graeme Duhamel and Joe Stewart after they won their semi-finals against Matt Barker and Darren Malzard respectively.

Reigning champion Duhamel won 53-26, 57-28, 65-17 while Stewart, who lost the third frame on the black ball, won 68-23, 49-37, 46-47, 63-38.

Both finals will be played at the Jersey Mechanics’ Institute in Halkett Place on Friday 11 April. The juniors start at 6.30 pm and the seniors at 7 pm.
