Landlord is fined for flouting the law
Monday 7th April 2008, 12:00AM BST.
A LANDLORD who let rooms to unqualified tenants has been fined £7,500.
Justin Ashley Wallbridge-Smith (36) was fined by the Royal Court for renting rooms to three non-qualified couples.
Wallbridge-Smith, who co-owned Laurel House, Rue de Crocquet, St Brelade, with his wife and brother, let rooms to lodgers between 2005 and 2006 for around £160 per week.
Crown Advocate Conrad Yates told the court that when the house was bought for ฃ443,000 in 2004, Wallbridge-Smith was fully aware of the housing regulations.
These meant that by law Wallbridge-Smith could only have non-qualified lodgers if he, his wife, or his brother lived in the property at all times.
