Lee caught but Gorrod stays clear
Monday 7th April 2008, 12:00AM BST.
JERSEY triathlete Brenton ‘Bomber’ Lee blew up in yesterday’s Fitness First Spring 10k run from the Waterfront to St Aubin and back.
Lee bravely took up the pace ahead of Guernsey’s Steve Dawes and Alan Rowe, but by the half-way point the Sarnians held a good lead and they went on to win in 32 minutes and 55 seconds and 33.07 respectively.
Young Toby Edwards put in a fast finish to be first Jersey male runner and third overall, 70 seconds behind second-placed Rowe. Early pace-setter Lee was sixth male home.
Jersey’s top women runner Jo Gorrod only decided to run 15 minutes before the start having felt under the weather the past week, and it proved to be a good decision in the end, as she won by 17 seconds from Guernsey’s Louise Perrio, who along with fellow Guernsey runner Martine Scholes pushed Gorrod hard on the outward run where Gorrod turned leading by just five seconds.
The race started in strong winds, snow and driving rain, only to finish in sunshine, with the wind having abated.
