Pension dispute could escalate into strike

A DISPUTE over pension rights for St Helier parish workers could result in a strike of all public sector manual workers.

The T & G Unite union says that the parish is employing staff on short-term contracts to avoid having to pay pension contributions.

They say that the move breaches contractual agreements that have been in place for many years.

St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft was told by the States deputy chief executive Mick Pinel before Christmas last year to employ its staff on a permanent basis to avoid breaching rules.
