Police may get new powers to tackle disorder

NEW police powers to tackle rowdy behaviour on the streets of St Helier are going to the States.

The proposals, which include anti-stalking legislation, are a rewritten version of a law which was withdrawn after a hostile reception from States Members last year.

Moves to make it illegal to protest with banners that others might find insulting have been scrapped, after several Members said this was too extreme.

Home Affairs yesterday published a redraft of proposals which, if adopted, would give the police new powers to deal with disorderly, abusive or threatening behaviour – and which would set up a new anti-stalking law.
