Frost-hit Royals to be a week late?

MONDAY night’s frost could have delayed this year’s crop of Jersey Royals.
Speaking yesterday, potato growers said that the frozen conditions early this week were likely to slow down the plant growth and could mean that there will be a smaller yield than usual.
Conditions on Monday were ideal for frost because the clear skies and calm air let the daytime heat escape and the frost settle.
Temperatures plunged to -6ฐC on the ground and to just above freezing-point in the air, causing some of the outer leaves on the plants to be burnt.
