U11s bounce back with a last-ditch festival goal

Thursday 10th April 2008, 12:00AM BST.

THE boot was on the other foot yesterday for Jersey in the 34th Primary Schools Football Festival as they scored a last-minute goal to draw 1-1 with Plymouth.

Twenty-four hours earlier Jersey’s U11s had lost out to Gloucester with a last-kick-of-the-game goal, but there was joy on the faces of the Jersey players yesterday as Jack Gibson nodded home a last-gasp equaliser at the FB Fields.

Jersey coach Rob Cameron said: ‘Plymouth are the strongest side we have played this week and to get a draw against them was very rewarding, as they have between 70 and 100 schools to chose their players from whereas we have just 29.

‘We kept the ball well at times and again our defence looked solid as a unit. It was hard-fought and even first half, but in the second period Euan Van Der Vliet made two fine saves to keep us in the game. Plymouth took the lead with a near-post header with ten minutes to go but we kept fighting and Jack Gibson nodded us level from Connor Spence’s corner kick.’

Jersey play Bath Yellow today before closing the Festival tomorrow against Thurrock.
