Jersey RFC seek home comforts
Friday 11th April 2008, 12:00AM BST.
JERSEY RFC are two games away from hosting a play-off for promotion to London I and director of rugby, Dai Burton, on the eve of Jersey’s London South II away game to Guildford, believes it will be Staines.
I can’t see it being Tring, who should win automatic promotion from London North II as they are three points clear, or third-placed Chingford, because Staines should win their last two games,’ he said.
‘Meanwhile, we’re sending over a very strong side and hoping that Chobham do us a favour by beating leaders of our division, Hayward’s Heath. But I can’t see it happening, though. They’re playing away, and Hayward’s Heath will be as wound up for it as they were against us.
‘I know that Staines will also be sending one of their coaches to Guildford to watch us play. We haven’t time to do the same against them. We’re too busy, planning to win against Guildford and then Wimbledon, next week, at home.’
Both Jersey’s London South II opposition will be relegated at the end of the season, as will Sevenaoks, who Jersey thrashed 62-5 at home two weeks ago. One victory will be enough to ensure Jersey get home advantage in a play-off.
The Sevenoaks victory, when all of the threes with the exception of stand-off Jon Swift scored tries, brought a smile back to Burton’s face because of the manner of their win.
‘We like to play an expansive game. It’s in our nature; almost historic with us,’ Burton said.
‘Some of the games we’ve played recently have been too forward dominated. It’s also good to see Sam (Tuia) back in the threes. He’s a line-breaker and we’ve missed his presence in the threes.’
Out through injury, Sam has nevertheless continued training in the gym and ‘looking at the size of his neck these days, he’s built more like a prop!’ added Burton.
Mark Le Mottee is included in the team at full-back while teenager Luke Le Sueur keeps his place on the wing.
Meanwhile, in reserve, is Brian Renisson, ‘a big Irish boy; a very aggressive winger,’ said Burton, although rangy second row forward,Toby Clyde-Smith will be missing from the squad as a knee injury, which requires surgery, will keep him out until Christmas at the earliest. Renisson showed his threat last weekend, when having been in a plane for the first half of Jersey 2nds’ friendly against Chew Valley, borrowed Burton’s boots before running in a hat-trick of tries.
