Last-minute list of GST exemptions is released

DIY house repairs, second-hand car sales and funeral costs have joined a last-minute list of GST exemptions.

From 6 May, the three per cent goods and services tax will be placed on nearly all items that shoppers buy on a daily basis but the States have approved a list of exemptions which they hope will ‘simplify’ the issue for businesses and consumers.

With housing prices soaring, Islanders keen to get on the property ladder will be relieved that housing sales, transfers and rents are all exempt, as are loans and mortgages. But although this applies to all residential property, some commercial property transactions will be taxable.
