Saturday 12th April 2008, 12:00AM BST.
Jersey players impressed on the opening day of the NatWest Jersey Open table tennis tournament at the Geoff Reed Centre yesterday.
Island development officer Craig Gasgoine and Yorkshire’s Ben Barlow won the senior team doubles, justifying their No 1 seeding by beating Suffolk’s Ryan and Jake Collins 3-1 in the final. The winners had knocked out Jersey’s Polish duo Marcin Jurkewicz and Gregor Frankowski in the semi-finals, a stage also reached by Islanders Paul Marshall and Trevor Lefebvre.
Eugene Ellis and Bruce Gallichan won the vets team event, beating fellow Islanders Bobby Vincent and Kevin Allen 3-0 in the final, while in the junior team final Jersey’s Josh Band and Chris Corfield went down 3-0 to the Collins brothers. Play continues over the weekend.
