Canavan is the new Island snooker champion

THE Island’s new snooker champion is Aaron Canavan, a first-time winner of the title.

He defeated Ray Kilmartin 65-40 in the best-of-seven frame final held at the Mechanics’ Institute.

Canavan started with breaks of 31 and 16 to make the score 56-36 on the green before Kilmartin fouled on the black and conceded the first frame.

In frame two both players struggled to find the right pace of the table and with only 11 points the difference on the yellow, Canavan potted that and the green, which meant that Kilmartin needed to pot the remaining four balls to win. His excellent screw-back saw the brown go down before the white also disappeared down the baulk pocket.
