Bull semen vote ‘dairy industry’s only chance’

JERSEY Dairy’s planned relocation will be threatened if bull semen is not allowed to be imported.

That was the warning from Jersey Milk Marketing Board chairman Andrew Le Gallais, who has called for all politicians – especially those who voted overwhelmingly last year to approve the dairy’s site move – to also vote to lift a bull semen importation ban at the States sitting on Tuesday 29 April.

‘Failure to remove the ban would inevitably be the death knell of the industry,’ he said. ‘If this proposition is rejected, the board would have to review the scale and operation of the planned dairy.’

In January 2007, the States voted 45 in favour with one abstention to approve Jersey Dairy’s plans to move from Five Oaks in St Saviour to Howard Davis Farm in Trinity.

A covenant was lifted to enable the move, after permission was granted by the Davis family, who gave the site to the Island.
