Cruel outcome in World final for Jersey pair
Monday 21st April 2008, 12:00AM BST.
WE was robbed! Never was the sporting cliche more appropriate than at Swansea on Saturday, when Jersey husband-and-wife duo Lindsey and Thomas Greechan were cruelly denied the WIBC world indoor pairs title.
Although he was too tactful to complain, Thomas Greechan did admit that he was disappointed to lose, after the Jersey duo had dominated the final against another married couple, Suzanne and Mervyn King, from Norfolk.
A slow start cost Lindsey and Thomas dearly, because they found themselves 0-7 adrift after only three ends, but, over the remaining 14 ends, they racked up 17 shots to their opponents’ six.
The Kings held on to win the first set, 9-7, but the Greechans took the second at a canter, 10-4, before the cruel nature of the sets format, which requires a tiebreak to determine the winner, was again in evidence.
