JEP fined for naming minor in court case
Monday 21st April 2008, 12:00AM BST.
THE JEP has been fined for publishing the name of a minor in a court report.
The newspaper, represented by editor and director Chris Bright, was fined £400 at the Magistrate’s Court on Friday after pleading guilty to breaking the Children Law by publishing an article capable of leading to the identification of a person under 18 concerned in court proceedings.
The charge arose from a 2007 report on a Royal Court case of drug importation in which a UK resident 16-year-old boy was tried with two over-18s. All three were given custodial sentences and the 16-year-old’s surname was inadvertently included in the reported comments of the prosecuting Crown Advocate.
The Magistrate, Ian Le Marquand , accepted that the offence, which carries a maximum fine of ฃ2,000, was at the lower end of the scale and imposed the ฃ400 penalty.
