Tuesday 22nd April 2008, 12:00AM BST.

HOLDERS Portugal came from 2-0 and 3-2 down to beat nine-man Jersey 4-3 in Group A of the Black Horse Local Community Championship football tournament last night.

In wet and miserable conditions, but on a good playing surface at St Brelade, Portugal won an entertaining match marred by the dismissals of Dave Watson and Robbie Whittaker – for the alleged use of foul language in the sixth and 40th minutes respectively. England, like all the other teams made up of Island residents, are the other side in the group.

Portugal spokesman Sergio Carolo said: ‘It was a good game, we showed a tremendous fighting spirit to come through and win.

Mistakes

‘Jersey were two-up inside 15 minutes, they were quick off the mark although we did contribute to both their goals with mistakes.
