New incinerator could cost less

IMPROVED recycling figures might mean the new incinerator will come in under its £84m budget.

The Transport department say that at the end of last year the Island was recycling 30.4% of its waste – well ahead of the 27% target for the year, and on course for the 32% target for 2009.

That could mean a smaller replacement incinerator at La Collette – which had been expected to need a 126,000-tonne capacity – but Transport Minister Guy de Faye says the size and price of the plant will be affected by a range of factors, including the Housing Needs Survey, future recycling and the strength of the pound against the euro.

‘The public response to waste disposal has changed significantly over the last three years, resulting in more public participation in recycling than envisaged,’ said the Deputy.
