Inquiry into patient death is launched
Thursday 24th April 2008, 12:00AM BST.
AN investigation has been launched into whether a faulty piece of surgical equipment at the General Hospital caused the death of an 82-year-old Islander.
Following the death of Maureen Jewell last week, an inquiry has been instigated by the Deputy Viscount, Peter de Gruchy, who sits as Jersey’s coroner.
Mr de Gruchy revealed that Mrs Jewell, who was born in Jersey and lived at Clos Gosset, suffered a perforation of the oesophagus, or gullet, during a procedure at the General Hospital to help her swallow more easily.
Mrs Jewell was airlifted to Southampton on 9 April after the procedure and died five days later.
