Island pride!

Thursday 24th April 2008, 12:00AM BST.

THE Island’s cricket, football and rugby teams will all be in home action on Saturday for what has turned into a super sporting weekend.

The RBS International London Division II rugby union play-off at St Peter dominates the diary, offering as it does a chance of an historic promotion to London I, with the club braced for a huge crowd to roar Jersey to their highest-ever position in league rugby from 3 pm.

Former South Africa Test star Peter Kirsten gets an early chance to see his new charges, the Jersey cricket team, in action at Grainville when they take on Guernsey from 11 am. The teams meet again on the Sunday, same venue, same time, with the matches guaranteed to be colourful, with both the CI rivals playing in coloured kit, with a white ball, for the first time ever in Jersey.

Dave Kennedy’s Muratti footballers warm-up for their big day on 5 May against Guernsey with a friendly against Alloa Athletic at Springfield on Saturday, kicking-off against a Select XI from the Scottish League Division II club.

Over in Guernsey the inter-insular contests continue with the Investec men’s and ladies hockey teams, RWB Ladies and Leopards, travelling for the annual Uptons, while Jersey’s snooker players, will attempt to pocket the Inter-Insular team trophy, while back in Jersey the Island’s swimmers contest their annual championship at Les Quennevais pool.

Sunday, too, is brimful of action, though many of the highlights, including Jersey RFC Academy’s defence of their Hampshire U18 Cup, are out of the Island. The Jersey youngsters defend the trophy against Petersfield, while the club’s U15s still have an outside chance of the U15 county title should they beat rivals Havant earlier in the morning.Unfortunately Jersey also require leaders Winchester to slip at the last hurdle to take the title on points difference.

Also out of the Island, but this time in Guernsey are Jersey’s leading netball clubs, who will battle for their sport’s Uptons at Beau Sejour. The main football action, too, is in Guernsey, with Trinity FSC’s under-16s attempting to win the U16 Upton and lift the John Leatt Memorial Trophy – for their third piece of silverware this season – when they take on Vale Rec at the Corbett Field.

Back in Jersey there is the highlight of the J Promail JRA rugby programme with the Sugden Cup final, between Jersey RFC 2nds and United Banks, and the Macmillian Cup final, between Les Quennevais and Beeches. The Spring Regatta will be organised by Royal CI Yacht Club in St Aubin’s Bay, while, back at Grainville, Jersey’s cricketers face Guernsey again.
