Panthers strike to earn hat-trick of Upton titles

Friday 25th April 2008, 12:00AM BST.

VOLLEYBALL’S 2e2 Panthers have became the first Jersey ladies team to win the Upton against Guernsey for three consecutive years.

Savills, the team that won Guernsey’s Ladies’ League, included several members of the island’s inter-insular winning squad of March.

They were determined to take the Upton silverware back to Guernsey too, but failed to break down Panthers, the Jersey team winning 25-22, 21-25, 25-22, 26-24.

In the men’s Uptons, Pentagon Red Hot Tomatoes took on Guernsey’s champions, Savills, and won 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-17).

With Daniel Grigoras on holiday, and John Vautier recovering from injury, Tomatoes were only able to muster six players. Fortunately, one of them was Krystof Piaceszny, who only got back to Jersey from his native Poland after the visitors had arrived.

Tomatoes’ captain, Paul Adamson, said: ‘The star of the game was, of course, Krystof. No matter what position he was in, he provided a strong outlet, and he lifted the team. But this was a fantastic victory for the whole team, and I am very proud of our achievement.’

Jersey’s under-17s took the first set 20-25. Guernsey recovered well to take the second set, but Jersey were back on form in the third, with great volleyball leading to long rallies.

Despite close finishes in the third and fourth sets, Guernsey took them and the match.
