Academy miss out in county cup bid

JERSEY RFC Academy’s dreams of retaining the club’s first county title ended in disappointment in the Hampshire U18 final in Petersfield yesterday.

Although an extremely young Jersey team – the squad contained six U16s – gave their all and led 6-5 at half-time, the hosts dominated the second half to run out 13-6 winners.

Jersey, despite battling all the way, had no complaints in losing to well-drilled and powerful opponents, who scored a try early in each half. Petersfield also had the distinction of being the first side to stop Jersey U18s scoring a try for many a season.

Head coach Bob Shambrook said: ‘Petersfield are an excellent side and deserved to win it. It was close and an excellent contest, but they did dominate in the second-half, kicking superbly well, while their rucking and turn-over play was tremendous.
