JEP will absorb cost of GST

Monday 28th April 2008, 12:00AM BST.

THE Jersey Evening Post will absorb the 3% GST instead of passing an increased cover price on to readers.

When the 3% sales tax begins on 6 May, the JEP will maintain its 45p cover price.

Guiton Publishing and JEP managing director Jerry Ramsden said that absorbing the tax on behalf of readers would cost the company more than £60,000.

In the UK, newspapers and magazines are zero-rated for VAT. But the States have decided not to include an exemption for newspapers in the Island, so national papers will be subject to a 3% surcharge.
