A dreaded day for a travelling teacher

Tuesday 29th April 2008, 12:00AM BST.

A NEWLY married Islander travelling around the world is having his three-foot dreadlocks cut off to raise money for Chinese orphans.

Steve Harris is hoping to raise $2,000 for the Half the Sky Foundation by having a hair cut for the first time in eight years.

Steve (25) and his wife Karen (24) are halfway through a 12-month honeymoon and are currently working as volunteers in a school in China’s Hainan province.

‘We have really enjoyed China,’ said Steve. ‘I had been saying since Guatemala that I should cut my dreadlocks off for charity – and I wanted to make sure it was in a country where we had really felt a connection.’

Steve’s chosen charity, the Half the Sky Foundation, strives to improve the lives of children in welfare institutions across China.
