Bull semen debate is put off until July

THE historic States debate on the future of the world-famous Jersey cow has been delayed for three months.

States Members were due to vote today on a proposition to lift the ban on imports of bull semen from outside the Island to allow the development of the Island herd through modern genetics.

But, faced with opposition from Scrutiny members, Chief Minister Frank Walker has agreed to send the matter to be scrutinised and brought back to the States at the end of July.

Senator Walker agreed last night to delay the debate on ending the 220-year tradition of protecting the purity of the Jersey cow in Jersey, which has split the dairy industry.

He said: ‘I was notified yesterday that Scrutiny wanted another look at the law. I agreed that they could on the understanding that the matter will be brought back to the States before our summer break.’
