GST: Ministers fight last-ditch changes
Tuesday 29th April 2008, 12:00AM BST.
MINISTERS are fighting a last-minute attempt to require shops to print the amount of GST on all till receipts.
They say that with the three per cent tax set to begin a week today, it is too late in the day to make changes to the system as proposed in an amendment due to be debated today.
If the States agree, it will mean consumers will not know the exact amount of GST they are paying because it has already been agreed to add the tax on the shelf and not at the till.
The Economic Scrutiny Panel, chaired by Deputy Geoff Southern , has lodged an amendment to the GST law to include a separate calculation for tax charged on the receipt.
