Tuesday 29th April 2008, 12:00AM BST.

THE number of people attending St Helier parish inquiries increased last year while the honorary police force there was more than 20 volunteers short.

The number of adults attending inquiries at the Town Hall rose by more than 240 last year compared to 2006 — an increase due mostly to motoring offences such as speeding.

The number of people dealt with at the Town Hall for offences on licensed premises — mainly for disorderly behaviour — also increased by 31. However, the number of juveniles seen at the Town Hall fell by 42 on the previous year.

Vingtenier Mitch Couriard said that the parish was currently in contempt of court for failing on two occasions to find people willing to fill vacancies for Centeniers.
