Recycling option backed by report

THE States should encourage more Islanders to recycle rather than throw ‘excessive’ amounts of cash at a new, oversized waste plant, according to a team of independent consultants.

Juniper, who are internationally recognised as experts in the analysis of waste technologies, warn that plans to build a large energy from waste facility contradict the key aim of the Island’s Waste Strategy.

The strategy says that the trend towards increasing levels of waste ‘must be stopped and then reversed’.

Juniper say: ‘Officers are planning to build an energy from waste plant that is sized on an assumption that waste will actually grow year-on-year. This implies that Transport and Technical Services officers are assuming that the waste minimisation efforts that are integral to the strategy will, in fact, fail.’
