States challenge to police media tactics

THE decision to tell the media that ‘partial child’s remains’ had been found at Haut de la Garenne was inappropriate, according to Deputy Sean Power.

He says that the police went too far when briefing journalists on 23 February after finding a skull fragment buried at the former children’s home.

But the policeman running the investigation has defended his briefings, asking if it would be better if the police instead covered up the discovery of human body parts.

The Deputy has tabled a question for today’s States sitting, and says other Members are lining up with questions for Home Affairs Minister Wendy Kinnard about the way States deputy police chief Lenny Harper has presented the case to the local and international media.
