GST will not be on receipts
Wednesday 30th April 2008, 12:00AM BST.
ISLANDERS will not know how much GST they are paying when they go to the shops next week.
A last-minute attempt to include GST on till receipts failed by just two votes yesterday.
The introduction of the 3% sales tax is less than a week away, and Members almost backed a move by the Economic Scrutiny Panel to require anyone giving a receipt to show the amount of GST paid.
They voted 23 to 21 to reject it, but only after Chief Minister Frank Walker and Treasury Minister Terry Le Sueur accepted that it was a good idea in the long term.
But they argued that with just six days left to the start of the tax being levied, the change was too late in the day.
