RWB pipped in hockey Upton
Thursday 1st May 2008, 12:00AM BST.
RWB missed out on their third trophy of the hockey season when they were beaten 3-2 by Guernsey Panthers in the Channel Islands Investec Ladies’ Upton in Guernsey on Saturday.
The Jersey champions were missing some key players due to injury but took the lead through a move by Chrissie Hefford and Nina Driscoll who, after a couple of rallies, found winger Jen Brankin to slam the ball in from the top of the D past keeper Collette Brown.
After a māšlee in the D Panthers levelled the score, pouncing on the ball after it had been kicked out by RWB keeper Sylvia Spinola.
The Jersey side nearly scored again when Sally MacDowall dodged past the keeper, but the ball was stopped on line by the defence and despite Carla Critch’s best efforts it was cleared.
Into the second half RWB’s prolific forward Jodie Botterill continued to probe forward but it was Panthers who struck first, despite the brave efforts of Kelly Butting and Lori Moran. They then went
3-1 up after a quick break.
Spurred on by this, RWB went on a furious attack which resulted in plenty of short corners, and eventually they were rewarded with a goal thanks to a beautifully struck shot by Nina Driscoll.
