Le Sueur refuses to drop GST

TREASURY Minister Terry Le Sueur refused to take GST off the price of food yesterday.

The Senator was bombarded with questions in the States about last week’s introduction of the goods and services tax and the numerous exemptions already in place.

In a bid to help people with the rising cost of Island life, Senator Le Sueur was asked if he would drop the 3% levy from food.

But he stood firm and said he would not be introducing an exemption on food. He said it would ultimately be up to States Members to decide if they wanted to exempt food, but that should not be considered until the introduction of GST in Jersey is reviewed later this year.

REF: SENATOR LE SUEUR AND GST.
The only suggestion I can make in respect of GST and our current politicians is for people to make a note of which of the current politians voted to bring in GST – WE MUST VOTE WISELY AT THE NEXT ELECTIONS TO ENSURE WE GET INTO THE HOUSE MORE RESPONSIBLE MEMBERS – i.e. Members who voted against GST or tried to delay its introduction such as Senator Ben Shenton, Deputy Roy Le Herissier,and many others – a list is available on the internet.

Having GST on food as absolutely disgraceful. I went shopping on Tuesday, out of 6 items in my trolley picked at random, 1 had increased 3%, and the others between 5% and 16% since last year. Having the GST added on items rather than as they do in America at the till is a license for firms to print money.
