IN response to pertinent inquiries by Deputy Sean Power recently, the Deputy Chief of Police suggested that anyone who questioned full and open disclosure was, in effect, advocating a cover-up.

Now we learn that Mr Harper knew at the end of March that what he had publicly referred to as the partial remains of a child were in fact no such thing. His sensational revelation in February was the spark that ignited a thousand negative and damaging stories about Jersey in the national and international press. Yet Mr Harper decided not to disclose that what he had termed ‘part of a child’s skull’ was probably a piece of wood. What was that if not tantamount to a cover-up?

In attempting to defend what appears to many people to be indefensible the police have said the information was withheld in order to obtain further verification of the facts. What a pity Mr Harper did not wait for verification of the facts before making the original inflammatory statement.
