Jersey provides world stage
Thursday 22nd May 2008, 3:00PM BST.
TOMORROW marks the beginning of the World Cricket League Division V tournament, the first international event hosted by Jersey.
Twelve teams from across the cricketing world will compete to keep alive their dream of World Cup qualification.
The teams are divided into groups A and B with the top two in each group progressing to semi-finals. The winner and runner-up will be promoted to the Division IV tournament to be held in Tanzania in October.
Although Afghanistan are arguably the favourites to win the tournament, Ward Jenner, vice-chairman of the Jersey Cricket Board, is not so sure.
‘We know that they’ve some frighteningly quick bowlers and that they’re going to rely more on pace, rather than spin,’ he said on the eve of Jersey’s opening game against Singapore at Grainville. Friday’s match starts at 11am.
