If the estimate produced by the Treasury is accurate, it would equate to around £17,000 for every day of 2008.

It is understood that Treasury Minister Terry Le Sueur will ask the States for the cash within weeks.

A proposition is likely to be presented for debate in the House asking for between £6m and £6.5m to be handed over to Home Affairs from the States consolidation fund, the JEP has learned.

That cash would pay for the projected cost of the investigation until 31 December this year. It has also been suggested that the £6m figure might be a conservative estimate.

To put that figure in context, total police expenditure for last year was just over £21m.
