Unwanted hat-trick for International U21 event

ISLAND supporters will not see a U21 Jersey Football Tournament played at Springfield in August – for a third summer running.
Organisers of the hugely popular tournament since its inception in 1999 Sporting Eventualities again had numerous teams interested in coming to play in Jersey but a lack of finance has again led to the plug being pulled on the venture, which last took place in 2005 when a senior Jersey team defeated Barcelona in the final.
However, organiser Iain Mackenzie said he is optimistic about a tournament being staged next summer. Mackenzie said: ‘It’s another year without a tournament and I’m disappointed; but it’s only fair to let the clubs know that it will not be taking place because they want to get pre-season matches arranged and as it’s end of season now players and officials will now be taking their summer breaks.
‘A lot of things were in place, we had a sponsor interested but we’ve just not got enough time to get everything decided in time so it was only fair to let the clubs know that there will be not tournament this summer,’ he said. ‘We had more clubs interested than we can accommodate and while it’s been shelved for this year we are already talking to a sponsor with a view to it being staged again next year.
