Population passes 90,000

JERSEY’S resident population has gone through the 90,000 mark for the first time.
The number of people living in the Island at the end of 2007 was 90,800 – up by a net 1,400 compared with the figure at the end of December 2006.
The figures were released today by the States Statistics Unit. They also show that the rate of deaths was at its lowest since 1952, while the birth rate was at its highest in a decade. A total of 320 more children were born during the year than the number of people who passed away.
The remainder of the 1,100 increase came from immigrants. About 600 more essential employees and their families moved to Jersey than left, while 500 more non-qualified people were also resident at the end of the year compared with 12 months earlier. Of the 1,100 immigrants, about 250 were children.

At the Imagine Jersey 2035 event Senator Walker was scaremongering the attendees with the low birth rate for the last few years. Maybe he should reconsider his plans for 2035 in the light of this news?
