Help diversification and give these young Jersey entrepreneurs their shed

AS one who agrees that we must diversify the economy to avoid over-reliance on finance, may I stress that we have the young thriving Jersey Oyster Company here in Grouville who are growing and exporting Jersey oysters.

It is hard, cold, dangerous work night or day, according to the tides, but staff have to drive their laden tractors 12 miles daily simply to reach their processing and packing shed and distribute the finest Grouville Bay oysters to top French and UK restaurants.

These young Jerseymen won the Enterprise Award of the year for 2007 so why was their application turned down to build a shed next to an already existing one and opposite the area they farm on the beach?

I am well aware of the threat to our agricultural land but in view of so many contentious buildings having been allowed, a shed seems less important. Most Jersey folk would be pleased to see these young Jerseymen who fly the Genuine Jersey flag have that daily 12-mile journey abolished.

They harvest the sea as generations have done before them and I fear that without their new premises our young entrepreneurs will lose out to yet another non-local firm.
