I hope this is not indicative of the whole investigation
Saturday 7th June 2008, 9:59AM BST.
From Barry Breuilly.
AS we all now know, Lenny Harper unleashed a media feeding frenzy after mentioning that human remains had been found at Haut de la Garenne, this before the material found had been established to be human.
For a man of his undoubted experience, he has displayed a gross naivety and should only have stated that items of interest had been found.
The Island would have escaped the derogatory reporting that it received and Senator Walker and indeed the Bailiff, would not have demeaned themselves on, of all days, Liberation Day. Without question Mr Harper brought this upon us.
It then appears that he withheld the ‘coconut’ findings from his political boss, Senator Kinnard, and made her look a fool at a States sitting.
I wonder it anybody noticed that, at a recent press conference, Mr Harper was calmly displaying evidence potential to a homicide, in the form of a child’s tooth. The tooth was contained within a plastic box but there was no sign of evidence labelling. Without it how has continuity of handling been maintained, from the article’s initial find to the present time?
In addition, Mr Harper happily divulged that bones, which have also been found, had been cut, suggesting by mechanical means, and that the bones were found in a fireplace.
Now surely Mr Harper, despite his previous gaffes, should have realised that should a suspect be brought to task, he or she alone would only know these facts, thus denying potential interview techniques.
As a former police officer, I sincerely hope this is not indicative of how the whole abuse inquiry is being handled.
