EU approval for data protection

JERSEY’S data protection regulations have been formally approved by a European Union inspection — easing rules on the transfer of information between Jersey companies and those in Europe.
The ‘adequacy assessment’ means that firms transferring information between Jersey and the EU will no longer have to complete a risk assessment beforehand.
Data Protection Commissioner Emma Martins said that until now, organisations had been obliged to take extra precautions to make sure that personal data being transferred to and from the Island was protected. Similar designations were given to Guernsey and the Isle of Man several years ago.
Mrs Martins said: ‘I am delighted that the many years of hard work in firstly ensuring that the law was of a sufficiently high standard and then working with the Commission to assist with the assessment have paid off.
