The vote in favour must be rescinded

From Bill Stuart-Williams.
THE JEP front-page story of 6 June implies that someone in Jersey must have known, before the States’ vote selecting Harcourt as the contractors for the new Waterfront development, that the company was facing a financial disaster.

Yet the Chief Minister and States Members, on behalf of the people of Jersey, were allowed to go ahead with a vote that approved the scheme that now appears to be financial pie-in-the-sky.
Three steps are essential immediately. Firstly, no contract should be signed to confirm the vote in favour of Harcourt.

Secondly the vote must be rescinded by the States to avoid future legal dispute and major claims for compensation.

Thirdly, the Chief Minister needs to publicly identify the person or persons who appear to have withheld this information until after the States had voted. I assume that as a matter of political honour he will ask for their resignations if they hold public office. Obviously those resignations should inevitably be accepted. When this has been done the States will no doubt want to consider other plans based on financial reality and common-sense.
