The pair were leading the field but on rounding the Grunes Du Port buoy near Noirmont they headed back towards Elizabeth Castle instead of St Aubin’s Fort.

Soon realising their mistake they started towards the Cigarette Mark and took the lead again from the other boats who were rowing straight up into a force three to four northerly headwind.

Ovenden and Monpetit, who bought the brand new EuroDiffusions sliding-seat boat over from France and are new to ladies’ sliding pairs this season, are leading the class so far.

Among the rest of the fleet there were some crew changes including in John Searson’s fours, Just Do It, featuring Gina Le Claire in for absent Lee Wells, which clocked up the fastest time of the handicapped race.

The Moore Stephens novice ladies’ fours crew completed the course with just three rowers, and a completely novice cox stepped in to steer Charlotte Smith’s novice fours to a good performance in what was the longest race of the season so far at 6.1 nautical miles.

The Third Gin D, which was cancelled due to strong winds, will now take place on Tuesday 17 June.
