Car sharing for business

0424374_cropped.jpgJERSEY businesses will have additional hurdles to jump in order to renew their three-year staffing licences.

Firms will in future be asked by Regulation of Undertakings to provide evidence that they are benefitting the community, acting responsibility to conserve resources, using resources outside the Island wherever possible and training their staff.

Economic Development Minister Philip Ozouf said that he would be encouraging firms to outsource ‘back office’ tasks to jurisdictions like India because of concerns over population growth.

The latest population statistics show that there were 90,800 residents living in the Island at the end of last year – a 1,400 increase over the year. Of this increase, 80 per cent were migrants moving to the Island, driven by increased employment in the private sector.

Senator Ozouf said that they would be looking at the travel plans of big employers, to see if they were minimising the impact on the environment, for instance car sharing, and flexible working, to take the pressure off the traffic on the roads. Other must-haves will be evidence of recycling, and training of staff.

    Puzzled, Again...

If the article is correct and Philip Ozouf indeed wishes to encourage outsourcing of ‘back office’ tasks due to concerns over population growth, then the Social Security department better prepare for a rather sizeable increase in unemployment claims.

Outsourcing won’t just limit the recruitment of new staff (local or foreign) it will result in the large scale redundancy of existing employees. Any company that can accomplish a task cheaper off-island, and is given full licence to pursue this option by our Economic Development Minister would be foolish not to do so.

Why is the Economic Development Minister trying on the double act as Population Control Minister? The issues of population and immigration control are for the States as a whole to resolve, and the sooner the better.

Yet more evidence that Phillip Ozouf is detached from reality! Is it not about time our States members start to think about and deal with proper issues?
Time for a change. Can’t trust any of them!

What an idiot! Encouranging jersey staff to be made redundant – Nice one! He should be discouraging firms in doing this not encouraging them! If the population is growing because of migrant workers, surely some control on how many we let in would be better… !
