Give us freedom to see politicians behaving properly

From David Gardiner.
I AM at a loss to find any worth in our politicians.

Firstly, our leaders should be clever. A degree or two might be nice for a start.

Then they should represent our Island well. Times have been hard recently, granted, but what an appalling performance they have given to the world. I am at a loss to know how they could have made us look worse.

Our leaders should not be corrupt. Well, we appear to have the only place in the world that has no corrupt politicians. This does make you think a bit. If at least a bit of corruption had been discovered and publicised we might actually believe that corruption would not be tolerated. Rather, it is never discovered and we are left feeling that there is a continual cover up.

Our leaders should put the public’s needs first. When is money spent on just improving the quality of life for the public in general? The park in Bath Street or Fort Regent will make no one any money, so they are left alone. Instead, they spend millions on studies to find things to do that make money for our movers and shakers. We do not even know how much money is used in expenses, and neither do they. It seems it is important to keep records on everything except that.

Lastly, we need to be sure they are being open and honest. Yes, it’s called freedom of information. We need to see this to know that our leaders are doing the right thing.

So, they tell us we don’t need freedom of information, they spend our money on studies and expenses and sinking roads, they represent us poorly to the world, they deny that there is any corruption but they do not allow us access to records to check up on them.
