A JERSEY student has been awarded a certificate for helping the homeless in Canterbury.
Rachael Dorey (21) received the award from the Lord Mayor of Canterbury, Councillor Carolyn Parry, for her work with St Mary Bredin Church, the Christian Union and the homeless in Canterbury.
The certificate was presented to Rachael, from St John, at a special ceremony at the university’s St Martin’s Priory which was attended by local organisations that have benefited from the work of student volunteers.
Rachael, who has a BA Joint Hons Fine Art and Religious Studies degree from the university, got involved with volunteering in Canterbury as part of the National Volunteers’ Week.
She said: ‘I was shocked by the number of homeless people when I came to Canterbury and I tried to find out how they got into their current situation.
