Sport for all

0558727_cropped.jpgCHILDREN will be offered free sport almost every day of the summer holidays in an unprecedented scheme to reduce anti-social behaviour.

The events, open to students aged between 11 and 17, are designed to keep teenagers occupied during a season renowned for increased youth crime.

David Kennedy, community development officer for sport, said: ‘This is a very big deal. As far as we are aware, nothing like this has happened in Jersey before. The holidays can be a very difficult time for parents and children. Parents often have to work and are not able to supervise their children. There are a number of reasons for running these events, but the main one is keeping the children occupied and reducing anti-social behaviour.’

The events, which start on 21 July, were announced just weeks after parts of the Island began suffering outbreaks of anti-social behaviour as the school year draws to a close. They will include touch-rugby, cricket and football, will be held at centres including West Park beach, Springfield Stadium, St Brelade’s beach and the FB Fields.
