Emergency move on build-up of rubbish
Saturday 21st June 2008, 9:59AM BST.
THE Island is struggling to cope with its waste following the breakdown at Bellozanne last week.
And in a bid to deal with mounting rubbish, an emergency planning application is to be made by Transport and Technical Services to find a site where waste can be stored until the problem is sorted out.
The announcement, by Transport and Technical Services chief executive John Richardson, comes two weeks before the States are due to debate the go-ahead for a multi-million-pound energy-from-waste plant which will serve the Island’s rubbish needs.
Mr Richardson said that the site should start operating on a limited basis this weekend as the department got clearance yesterday to effect temporary repairs to the 100-foot chimney that will allow some burning to take place. The work will take up to six months to complete and will cost about £750,000.
