States homes fail test
Saturday 21st June 2008, 10:00AM BST.
AROUND one in every five States homes fails to meet the UK decent homes standards, it has been revealed.
Figures released this week show that 16 per cent – 712 – of the 4,452 States dwellings do not meet the most basic standards with which all UK council homes must comply by 2010.
These standards require that they are fit for habitation, are in a reasonable state of repair, have reasonably modern facilities and have central heating with temperature controls.
Carl Mavity, the director of estate services at Housing, said that he was satisfied that States homes were fit for living in and were wind- and weather-tight.
He added that most of the dwellings that failed did so on account of the age of their kitchens, because some bed-sits still had shared facilities such as bathrooms, or because their only heating source was a solid fuel fire.

They should take a closer look at where my parents live. Evertime its windy and rains they have to stuff the windows full of clothes to stop the water getting in.
Plus there bedroom is black with mould. They have to keep washing the walls down with bleach.
Disgusting for anyone, but they are in their 70′s.!

Our politicians are not particularly concerned with issues such as social housing they are far too busy ensuring that we have an iconic waterfront to boast about, a more aesthetically pleasing corner at Bel Royal, a Life Enhancing logo on our tourism blurb, and an anthem. As an island we have to get our image right because it’s all about the image of Jersey internationally in this materialistic day and age!

and it’s not just States housing …. most flats built in the last 10-20 years in Jersey would fail to meet UK standards.

Andrew, i think you could cut it down to 5 years.
There are new build appartments in Jersey that have some defects already and the developers do nothing. If the States wont help its tenants what hope have the private sector?
Its shameful that in one of the richest countrys in the world that our OAP have to live in pitiful conditions.

It makes you laugh really, because they no that the houses are not wind and water tight and tennants have been arguing for years to get new windows and doors. Its alright to say that these houses are not fit,if they are not fit then people should not be living in them, if the states didnt waste so much money on things we dont need and do 6 monthly/yearly maintenance work on the states properties instead of getting cowboys in then it wouldnt cost the taxpayers so much money in the first place. Ive lived for a very long time with water actually pouring into my house through the windows and the doors and have had to open my top window to stop the rain coming in and was then told by one workmen that these sort of things happen and every now and again you will get some water coming through your windows and doors, unbelieveable!!! i no im a women but im not stupid.
