Itex Walk: Hundreds complete the 48 miles
Monday 23rd June 2008, 3:02PM BST.
HUNDREDS of Islanders donned their walking shoes to take part in the round-the-Island Itex Walk at the weekend.
Organisers said that 667 people completed the whole walk – 48.1 miles – which raised over £100,000 for good causes.
Setting off from Elizabeth Terminal at 3 am, the 1,127 people who started the walk included members of the 42 Engineer Regiment (Geographic) who completed it in uniform as well as carrying their full 20kg kit.
One of their team, Michael Cambridge, said it was the hardest thing they had ever done. ‘I have served in Afghanistan and Iraq but physically you would never get up to the standard for this distance,’ he said.
The three main charities to benefit from the event are the Jersey Cheshire Home, RNLI and the Riding for the Disabled Association.

Hi !
I am a french girl and I did the Itex Walk on saturday the 21st. As I am bad-seing people, I did the walk with a friend. We reached the Devil’s Hole Check Point at 12:00. We stopped there because it was to difficult for me (the cliffpathes were to hard to see). I send my excuses to the ones I blocked during the Walk !!
It was the first time I went to Jersey and I loved this island, the people. My wish now is to come bak and take time to visit (I will programm a trip soon I hope).
If an “Itex walker” wants to contact me, please contact the JEP for my email.
Thanks again for your welcoming and see you soon !

My daughter, who now lives on the island, completed the Itex walk in 2007 and challenged me to ‘have a go’! My wife and I flew over from the UK for a double celebration, our daughter’s engagement to a ‘Jersey Bean’ and my successful completion of the Itex walk.It was probably the greatest physical challenge I have ever undertaken and has left me with a great sense of personal achievement. The organisation of the event was first class in every respect, as was the encouragement and support provided by the army of helpers. Well done Jersey, the Itex walk is a wonderful experience, especially as the pain and soreness fades to be replaced by very, very fond memories of the whole weekend.

‘well done to anyone who took part in this yrs itex,it was amazing, and a lot of hard work, but any who made it round will know how i’m feeling inside too.two yrs ago i was lame in one leg and have only started walking properly the last 8 months,so to make it all the way for me was out of this world,if i can do it you all can do it,don’t rush at the start and you may just make it round,i took my time and rested lots, plenty of water and lots of cakes and crisps for the energy, and bananas of course,so good luck for next yr guys and girls, if you think it too hard for you, just think of the africans who have to walk miles and miles just for water, there’s always someone worse off than yourselfs, it a great achievement
