Care leavers demand UK trial

Wednesday 25th June 2008, 2:59PM BST.

00484489_cropped.jpgTHE Jersey Care Leavers Association has threatened to take UK Secretary of State for Justice Jack Straw to court if he fails to appoint independent judges to investigate the historical child abuse allegations.

The association has met MPs in the Houses of Parliament and has brought a petition with them which asks Mr Straw (pictured) to intervene.

And today a vote of no confidence in the Bailiff, Sir Philip Bailhache, has been officially lodged with the States by Deputy Shona Pitman. She is upset that Sir Philip used his Liberation Day speech to criticise the national media handling of the Haut de la Garenne case.

Senator Stuart Syvret, who is a supporter of the association, is also in London with the group, who have met a number of MPs, lawyers and social workers. He said that the aim of the visit was to get more signatures on their petition and explain directly to MPs about what has gone in Jersey and to try to gain their support.
