Lawyer to campaign against move to CET

00569595_cropped.jpgA FORMER States Member is to spearhead a campaign against moving to Central European Time.

Advocate Chris Lakeman (pictured) hopes to muster the many Islanders who he believes would oppose the move.

The issue is to be the subject of the first referendum held in Jersey in recent times. States Members last week backed a proposal to hold the Islandwide vote on 15 October – the same day as the Senatorial and Constables elections.

Islanders will be asked to answer yes or no to the question: ‘Do you think that Jersey should adopt Central European Time?’ The result of the referendum will not, however, decide the issue; it will be up to States Members to make a final ruling – and they will not be bound by the result of the vote.

More than 500 JEP readers have so far voted in the poll to be found here at www.thisisjersey.com Of the respondents who have cast their vote so far, 54 per cent have voted no, and 46 per cent, yes. The voteline closes at 9 am on Thursday.

A really really stupid idea if ever I have heard one! A very unnecessary move!

Having visited Jersey almost every year for the past 35 years, I am against the move to CET. Also to hold the referendum on the same day as the States elections will distract attention away from the importance of those elections.

    YES YES YES to C E T

Only one problem irrespective of the referendum result based upon their past track record the council of ministers will have already made their decision and will try to persuade the rest of the present members otherwise

Hopefully the final decision will not be debated until the new house sits

The only good thing about organising this referendum is that it might encourage more people to go and vote in the elections. Otherwise, it is just one more ‘initiative’ that is a complete waste of time and resources.

Watch out for election candidates that include a policy on CET in their campaign. Especially if it corresponds with the favoured option according the results of the JEP poll! It is likely to mean that they have very little to offer us in terms of proper governance.

i think that the move to central european time will make a lot more sense because of fitting in with trading hours from other countries as well, as saving millions of pounds more each year on artificial lightening where a lot more of daylight hours will go to better use.

also there will be millions of lives more saved each year from accidents and deaths on the road by traffic.

yes’ lets make the move as it’s now high time whether or not if any one’s against the move will have to get use to it in time or find somewhere else to live.

Greenwich Mean Time must be made illegal to use in the near foreseeable season and ever.

begone those evil dark winter months of more accidents and deaths on the road by traffic and, bring in that extra hour of daylight for safety reasons of a lot of people getting back before dark.

god forbids if clocks were ever turn by to that old civil again, with a bit of luck it shall be a thing of the past.
